When the team behind Freiburger Filmforum (FIFO) returned to talk with us about the 2023 edition of the festival, we were super excited for two reasons. First, they’re a wonderful team to work and ideate with. Secondly, 2023 was set to be the first on-location edition of the festival after the pandemic. So a lot of our initial conversations revolved around ideas of community and connection. 

We settled on using rhizomes as a point of inspiration - the very same properties of the underground stems that appealed to Deleuze and Guattari spoke to the team at FIFO as well. The decentralised and anti-hierarchical systems of connection and transfer were a distillation of everyone’s hopes for the festival. 

Shoumik Biswas was our design lead on this project and their adaptation of the rhizome motif became one of the building blocks for the 2023 Fifo brand. Once we had this locked in, the rest of our work flowed smoothly, helping round out the brand of FIFO 2023.
